What is Floating

Floatation therapy (also known as floating, sensory deprivation or Restricted Environment Stimulation Therapy (R.E.S.T)) is designed to create an environment free of external stimuli. The floatation tank is filled with body temperature water and is topped with about 500kg of Epsom salts. You enter a safe environment where you get to experience zero gravity, thanks to the buoyancy created by the Epsom salts. You lose track of where your body ends and the water begins due to the body temperature water.

For an hour you get to effortlessly float and drift away into a dream like theta state. Light and sound slowly fade away. Floating in this environment allows your body to absorb magnesium (a very important element for our bodies functioning), promote greater muscular relaxation, induces a state of profound relaxation and allows your mind to enter a deep meditative state. You can experience a sense of focus and clarity that is otherwise difficult to achieve. It is the ideal time to reflect on your life and the ideal environment to cultivate creative and personal insight.

Floatation has been proven to offer relief for a wide range of ailments and there are measurable changes that occur within the mind and body system. Floatation has been shown to improve overall function and performance. It is an incredibly relaxing experience leaving you with a powerful rejuvenating effect.

There is no right or wrong way to do it! Just enter the tank and float away 🙂

Physical Benefits of Floating

Due to the weightless environment provided by the pod, floating relieves back pain, neck pain, arthritis, tendinitis, inflammation, and even fibromyalgia to reduce chronic pain. It has also been shown to help with spinal misalignment issues. It is a great option for natural treatment. Imagine you're floating on a fluffy cloud and how that would relieve any tension in your body, that's what floating is.

Floating relaxes the body and this promotes blood circulation, accelerates muscle tissue repair, and eliminates metabolic by-products. This is especially beneficial to athletes and those with injuries or chronic pain.

When floating you are totally relaxed and this reduces stress hormones. In addition, your digestive and reproductive system take a break and insulin sensitivity can decrease. All these factors enhance immune function.

Magnesium assists in regulating high blood pressure, preventing cardiovascular disease, preventing osteoporosis, relieving menopause symptoms, providing PMS relief, and creating healthier bones and teeth. The pod is filled with over 500kg of Epsom salt (magnesium sulphate) which is absorbed through skin, so you get your dose of Magnesium.

One float session can feel like 4-6 hours of sleep. It is extremely refreshing and rejuvenating.

Floating takes your mind to another place and the change in your physical state and mental outlook may provide you with a healthier perspective in which to put your body and mind to rest, allowing for great sleep. If sleep is an issue for you, or if you have late working nights, a baby that won't let you sleep or suffer from insomnia then floating can be extremely therapeutic.

Mental Benefits of Floating

Floatation therapy is one of the most effective stress reduction techniques known today. In controlled studies, compared to bed rest, floating has been shown multiple times to be the most relaxing experience on earth.
Floatation aims to eliminate as much external stimuli as possible giving your nervous system a true break. In a city with constant buzz, daily stress triggers everywhere, we rarely give our system a break.

There is continuous research on how floating has the ability to reduce feelings of anxiety and depression. When your mind goes in to stillness it is allowed to "reset", become more aware of daily patterns and notice what we often overlook. If you're claustrophobic then have comfort in knowing many people have no issues with floating rather they experience the positive relaxation benefits.

We have 2 sides to our brain- left and right- and they both operate differently. The left is the analytical side while the right is the more creative side. When you allow all senses to be turned off, the right side opens up allowing a flow of creativity and problem solving. A study in Music and Medicine found that jazz students who floated once a week for a month were able to improvise better than their professors!

While floating you are in a state of absolute relaxation while still being intensely awake, this combination allows visualisation to be very powerful. Many have used the visualisation tool to enhance their performance, whether it is athletes preparing for a competition or a public speaker preparing for a presentation. Research has shown that mental preparation and rehearsal to be just as practical and powerful as physical practice.

When the brain is in a theta brain wave state, the mind becomes highly suggestible. This means that new material can be easily absorbed and retained. Research has shown that there is an improved performance in memory and recall activities. So why not use floating to enhance your memory or along side exam preparations?

I graduated from Law in 2011 and started working in the corporate world in 2012. I started my personal growth journey in 2019 and having worked through some stuff with hypnotherapy I decided it was time to take a break from the corporate world. I took some me time, and started exploring what else I could do within the legal field. But life has a funny way of serving you up with what you need just when you need it! And that’s when I came across WILDFIT®, a life transforming program that changed my relationship with food, changed my health trajectory, made me more confident and opened my eyes to my real purpose. I had always wanted to be of service to people that’s why I did law to help others. But now I found a way to truly help people feel better!

When starting RE I hadn’t tested out floating but I knew from what Rushabh and Rachna shared and from research that this falls in perfectly for someone who is looking for wholesome wellness. I knew it was something I needed to be a part of and something that everyone needed to have available to them.

Coming out of university I thought my life was set out…work as an optometrist, get married, live close to my family and travel. Life threw me a curveball in 2018 and I jumped ship and moved to Kenya, completely new environment, new people, new culture. Being here took me out of my comfort zone completely and it made me take a long hard look in the mirror. I started prioritising my wellbeing in the way of exercise, eating well and mindfulness. Rushabh and I went on an epic round the world trip (yes we are married) and we found ourselves in a float centre in Perth. Skeptical, I tried it out and though I didn’t have the greatest first experience I really understood and saw the benefits of floating personally. Because my body and mind had time to rest, things/situations which would normally bug me would just fly over my head and my stress levels reduced the more I floated. I was finding myself more and more at peace (and I already believed I was at peace!). We live in a chaotic world and our minds are constantly on ON mode and having floated and seeing what a little ‘OFF’ time can do, the 3 of us decided to bring a little peace to Nairobi.

I am a work hard, play hard sort of guy. I enjoy keeping fit, playing sports and many other extracurricular activities. I do believe in a work-life balance but haven’t got it right just yet!

Over the years, it feels like life is only getting faster and faster. Aside from taking holidays every now and again, I realised that I needed to completely ‘switch off’ more frequently to really get that reset.

And that’s where floatation therapy hit the spot. I first tried it in Australia a couple years ago. Floating has given me an easy outlet to truly rest, relax, recover, reset, recharge and a whole lot more.

Everyone else can also benefit from floating now that RE is here in Kenya!
